Frugal Housing: Small is Beautiful

When it comes to houses, bigger isn’t necessarily better. Who wants to spend all their time dusting, mopping, and vacuuming thousands of square feet?

Take a moment and consider your own accommodations. Can you get by with a smaller house or apartment?

“Trading down” can eliminate a lot of stress from your life by lowering your rent or mortgage payment. You’ll also decrease your utility bills, as it takes much less energy to heat and cool a smaller space.

In fact, you’ll be surprised how much money you save when you downsize your digs. Since you’ll have less to maintain, you’ll spend less money on repairs and cleaning supplies. Furthermore, your reduced living (and storage) space will likely lower your overall spending—because there’s no sense in buying stuff when you have nowhere to put it!

I found the book Rescue From Domestic Perfection by Dan Ho (marked down at TJ Maxx). It is my favorite book on simplifying life and your home.

My husband and I bought our house about 15 years ago. It was built in 1926 and it’s a charming English Tudor with all the cool original features. Including closets the size of shoeboxes!
We have a rule: nothing comes in without something going out. This keeps impulse purchases at bay :)
