Don’t pay a premium for designer curtains–make your own window treatments! It’s not rocket science, and can actually be a lot of fun.
First, select a fabric that’s complementary to the room. See what you have around the house before heading to the store: a pretty tablecloth or bed sheet can make an attractive window covering. (If all you have is plain white, get creative with some fabric paints!)
Next, decide on what hardware you’ll use to hang them. If you already have curtain rods, choose from the following methods (easy, easier and easiest):
Easy: Cut the fabric to the appropriate size, hem the bottom, then fold over the fabric at the top to make a rod pocket. Secure hem and rod pocket with a simple straight stitch or iron-on tape.
Easier: Use ring clips, and avoid the need to make a rod pocket.
Easiest: Simply drape the fabric over the curtain rod (this technique works best with lightweight fabrics and scarves).
If you don’t have (and would rather not spring for) curtain rods or hardware, attach the fabric directly to the wall with upholstery tacks.
Finally, stand back and admire your frugillionaire handiwork. And don’t forget to congratulate yourself on how much money you saved!
